Activities/ Members Group

A regular activities session was developed and held at Sandhill Centre, where members and their families take part in a range of activities, events and outings.

History of Headway Wearside

In June 2006

Alastair White Regional Co-ordinator for Headway held some investigative meetings looking at the possibility of forming a steering group with the remit of creating Headway Sunderland. Although there was a significant uptake with regards to the activities that Alastair White was facilitating, there was a reluctance to take things forward structurally.

Seeing the need to support this group, WearAble, a disability support group started to facilitate this group of brain injury survivors, and carers. This group became known as BIG Sunderland. Alastair White kept in contact with WearAbles development worker Kim Hunter to monitor the progress of the group. During this time, Paul Brown of Thompsons Solicitors was also keeping in contact with the group.

May 2009

Paul Brown contacted Alastair White with regards to looking again at creating a Headway presence in the Sunderland area. Alastair White then contacted Kim Hunter to take this further, and as the funding for WearAble was coming to an end, it seemed that the creation of a Headway branch [Headway Wearside] would be seen as a natural progression for the BIG Sunderland Group.

June 2009

Following the formation of a steering group the transition from BIG was achieved.

24th November 2009

Headway Wearside was formally established at a high profile launch by the Mayor of Sunderland at the Sunderland Football Club’s Stadium of Light in Sunderland with over 120 people in attendance.
